The Lamar County School System will be delaying dismissal for all schools by one hour Monday, August 21st, due to the expected solar eclipse and its impact on the area. Schools will begin at normal, regularly scheduled times. While only counties in Northeast Georgia will experience a total solar eclipse, Lamar County will experience the moon’s shadow over 90% of the sun between approximately 1:07 pm and 4:03 pm. The eclipse will peak around 2:38 pm in Lamar County (during normally scheduled dismissal).

There is no safe time to view the eclipse with the naked eye. Gazing at the sun without proper eyewear can cause permanent eye damage or blindness. ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF WILL BE SAFELY INDOORS FROM 1:30-3:30. NO CHECKOUTS WILL BE PERMITTED FROM 1:30-3:30 at any school. No Middle or High School outdoor activities will occur until after 4pm. Ensuring all students are under the supervision and guidance of adults during this hazardous time is of great importance to the school system and board of education. This is the best course of action to ensure safety.

Middle & High School Dismissal 3:30 pm
Primary & Elementary School Dismissal 4:15 pm

We realize the potential inconvenience this delay may pose to families, however, the safety of our students and staff is top priority for our district. Each building is working to establish activities and instruction to take advantage of this event in a safe classroom environment.

Please contact your child’s principal with any questions or concerns you may have.
