Lamar County Schools’ English
Learners (EL) Program is designed to help eligible English Learners
students develop and improve English proficiency in grades K-12.
Instruction and additional support in the content areas, provided by
various delivery models, helps to provide a language foundation for
these students so that they are able to later participate independently
in the regular classroom instruction.
Criteria for eligibility:
The WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test (W-APT) is administered to students who meet the following criteria:
-
The first language is not English.
-
A language other than English is spoken in the home.
-
The language used most often is not English.
The score on the W-APT determines if
a student qualifies for ELL services. Between February and March, all
ELL students are administered the ACCESS test to determine their
reading, writing, listening, and speaking proficiency growth and
academic levels. A student’s score on the ACCESS determines continuation
or termination of ELL services.
