School counselors are professional educators with a
mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenges
presented by today’s diverse student population. School counselors do
not work in isolation; rather they are integral to the total educational
program. They provide proactive leadership that engages all
stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help students
in their academic, social, emotional and personal development, and help
them to define the best pathways to successfully achieve their dreams.
The mission of the Lamar County school counseling program is to
facilitate the development of student competencies in the academic,
social/personal, and career domains. The counseling curriculum is
delivered to all students through individual, small group, and large
group sessions. Each school incorporates a team approach in which all
school personnel, parents, and community work in a collaborative effort
to enhance the success of all students in today’s changing
multi-cultural society. Students will be prepared for their roles as
life-long learners, and socially responsible, productive citizens as a
result of the Lamar Schools’ counseling program pre-K-12.
All Lamar counselors support instruction by helping students prepare
for their cognitive experiences and by helping to dispel affective
disorder in their lives. The counselor sees as interdependent both the
personal and academic realms and assists students in making wise
decisions in each realm. Counselors work with both faculty and family to
assure the best possible learning experience, resulting in each Lamar
student’s learning to learn, learning to live, and learning to work.
